WowKey Android Guide: From Saving a Login to Autofill

Set up Android autofill, create and manage login items, use OTP and passkeys, save credentials automatically, share items securely, and generate strong passwords.

This guide is for new Android users. Once you have completed the setup, WowKey can offer saved login information in supported apps and websites, and help you save new credentials, one-time passwords, and passkeys.

1. Before you begin: enable autofill

Autofill is the feature you will use most on mobile. Set WowKey as the default autofill service first, so Android can offer saved items when you tap a username or password field.

  1. Open WowKey, sign in, and unlock your vault.
  2. Go to Settings and open Autofill.
  3. Select Set up or Autofill service, then choose WowKey on the Android system page.
  4. Return to WowKey and confirm that autofill is enabled.
  5. To use passkeys, enable Passkey support on the same page. You can also enable Automatically copy OTP code if you want the current code copied when login details are filled.

Extra setup for Chrome and Brave

After enabling WowKey in Android settings, Chrome or Brave may also need to allow a third-party autofill service. Open the browser settings, go to Autofill service, select Use another service for autofill, then restart the browser.

Xiaomi devices: If the autofill window does not appear, check whether WowKey is allowed to show pop-up windows while running in the background.

2. Create a login item

A login item stores a service name, username, password, and matching website or app. Save one while registering for a service instead of leaving its password in a chat or note app.

  1. On the vault home page, tap the add button and choose Login.
  2. Enter a recognizable item name, such as the service name or your work email account.
  3. Enter the Username and Password. A username can be an email address, phone number, or account name.
  4. In the Smart suggestions search field, enter a website or service name, such as “Google” or “Taobao”. Select the correct result to fill its domain into the Website field below.
  5. If there is no suitable result, or you need a specific sign-in address, enter the real URL directly under Website. To associate a native app, you can also add the matching Android app. Website or app details are used for future matching.
  6. Optionally add the item to a folder, write a note, or mark it as a favorite.
  7. Tap Save.

Why add a website or app? WowKey uses it to decide whether an item matches the current login page. Without a matching address, autofill may not find the item.

3. View, edit, and organize items

Passwords and account details change. Updating an existing item is cleaner and safer than creating several similar items for the same service.

  1. Search your vault by item name, username, or website, then open the item.
  2. Select Edit.
  3. Update the name, username, password, website, folder, or note, then tap Save.
  4. If you have just changed a website password, update the original item instead of creating a separate “new password” item.

Use favorites for frequently used items and folders to separate personal, work, and family accounts. For highly sensitive items, you can require another authentication step before viewing or autofilling them.

4. Use the password generator

Use the generator to create unique, strong passwords. Prefer it when registering for a new service, changing a weak password, or replacing a reused password.

  1. Open Generator and select Random password.
  2. Set the length. For ordinary website passwords, use at least 15 characters and keep uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
  3. If a website rejects particular symbols, adjust Special characters and generate again. Do not reuse an old password just to accommodate the website.
  4. When you are satisfied with the result, tap Use to carry it into a new item, or copy it into the password field you are editing.
  5. Save the login item, then return to the website or app to finish registration.

The generator also provides Passphrase and PIN modes. A passphrase is useful when you must type a password manually but still want a strong option. Use a PIN only when a service specifically requires one; it is not a replacement for a full password on high-value accounts.

5. Add a one-time password (OTP) to a login item

An OTP is a time-based verification code commonly used for two-step verification. Saving it with the related login item keeps the username, password, and current code together.

  1. In the service’s security settings, enable two-step verification and choose an Authenticator app.
  2. Keep the service’s QR code or setup key on screen. In WowKey, open the related login item and select Edit.
  3. Find the OTP password or authenticator-key field. Tap the scan icon to scan the QR code, or enter or paste the TOTP secret if the service provides a key instead.
  4. Save the item. WowKey will begin showing a code that refreshes on a timer.
  5. Return to the service and enter the current code to complete setup. Do not close the service page until it confirms that setup succeeded.

Important: A QR code and authenticator key are as sensitive as a password. Do not send either one to anyone, and do not remove the old authenticator method until the service has confirmed the new setup. This flow supports standard otpauth://totp authenticator links.

6. Save and use passkeys

A passkey is not a value you enter manually. A supporting website or app must initiate the creation request; WowKey then creates and stores the passkey through the Android credential request.

Save a new passkey

  1. Complete the autofill setup in section 1 and enable Passkey support in WowKey.
  2. On a website or app that supports passkeys, go to account security and choose to add, create, or register a passkey.
  3. When Android shows the credential or passkey request, choose WowKey.
  4. Unlock WowKey and check the account and website shown in the request.
  5. Choose an existing matching login item or create a matching item as prompted, then confirm the save.
  6. Return to the service and wait for confirmation. The item’s details will then show passkey information.

Sign in with an existing passkey

  1. On the website or app sign-in page, choose Use a passkey or similar wording.
  2. Choose WowKey and the relevant account in the Android credential picker.
  3. Unlock WowKey or complete the requested biometric verification.
  4. Android returns to the original website or app and completes sign-in.

Note: You cannot create a working passkey from scratch in the vault. It must begin with the target service’s passkey-creation flow. If WowKey reports that a passkey is out of date, open the app, refresh your vault, and try again.

7. Sign in automatically in apps and websites

After autofill is enabled and the login item is saved, everyday sign-in usually takes only one item selection.

  1. Open the login page in the target app or website and tap the username or password field.
  2. Select the matching WowKey item from the keyboard suggestion or autofill window.
  3. Unlock WowKey when asked. Android fills the username and password.
  4. If the item has an OTP, continue with the verification-code field. Depending on your settings and the target app’s support, WowKey can show a code notification or copy the current code.
  5. Check the account on the sign-in page before submitting it.

If the correct item does not appear, use Manual selection in the autofill interface to search the vault. Then check that the item has the correct website or Android app. Enabling Record app or website after filling can improve future matching.

8. Automatically save a new account or changed password

When you create an account, change a password, or manually enter credentials in an app or website, Android can pass the submitted login information to WowKey. First make sure WowKey is your system autofill service.

  1. In Settings > Autofill, enable Request to save data.
  2. Register, sign in, or change a password in a website or app that supports the Android Autofill Framework, then submit the form normally.
  3. When Android recognizes both a username and password, follow the WowKey save flow to confirm the information to save or update.
  4. If you recently filled an existing item with WowKey and then changed its password, the flow prioritizes updating that recently used item. Otherwise, it creates a new login item.
  5. Return to WowKey and check the item name, username, password, and matching website or app. Edit it immediately if needed.

If automatic saving does not appear: Your vault may be locked, the page may not provide Android with both a username and password field, or the browser or app may not support a system save request. In those cases, create the item manually as described in section 2.

9. Securely share a vault item

Secure sharing starts from an existing vault item and creates a separate protected link. It does not share your entire vault. The link contains a snapshot of the item at the time you generate it; later edits to the original item do not automatically update an existing link.

  1. Open the regular vault item you want to share. OTP items cannot be shared this way.
  2. Choose Secure sharing from the item’s action menu, then check the item name and the information you are about to deliver.
  3. Set a link lifetime: 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, or 30 days.
  4. Optionally enable Allow one view only. For additional protection, enable Require an access password and set the password.
  5. Tap Generate link.
  6. Return to the vault home page. Under My Shares, open the new record, copy its link, or use the system share sheet to send it to the recipient.
  7. When the share is no longer needed, return to My Shares to disable or permanently delete the link.

Confirm what is included before sharing

Secure sharing does not provide a field-by-field selection screen. It uses the current information for the item type. A login item includes its username and website, and includes its password when you have permission to view it. OTPs, passkeys, and attachments are not included in the link.

If you only need to deliver part of the information, create an item containing only the necessary data, then securely share that item. Do not send the access password and the link in the same chat; use a phone call, in-person handoff, or another trusted channel for the password.

10. Troubleshooting

WowKey does not appear on a login page

  • Confirm that Android has selected WowKey as the autofill service.
  • In Chrome or Brave, confirm that Use another service for autofill is enabled, then restart the browser.
  • Confirm that you are signed in to WowKey and that the vault is unlocked.
  • Use Manual selection in the autofill interface. If you can find the item, check its website or Android app information.

An autofill suggestion appears, but it is the wrong item

  • Edit the item’s Website or Android app information to match the real login target.
  • Do not combine several unrelated services in a single login item.
  • If a website should never show an autofill suggestion, mark it as non-matching or block it in Autofill settings.

An OTP or passkey does not work

  • OTP: Make sure you scanned the authenticator QR code supplied by the website, not a QR code for an SMS verification code. Check that your device time is set automatically.
  • Passkey: Confirm that the service itself supports passkeys and that Passkey support is enabled in WowKey.
  • For either issue, make sure WowKey can unlock and sync normally. If you see a passkey status message, open the app, refresh, and try again.

Once you have completed the setup, try the full flow with a low-risk test account first: create an item, autofill it, add an OTP or passkey, and test automatic saving. Then move on to important email, payment, and work accounts.
